Orange County supervisors Tuesday unanimously approved the conversion of an old Santa Ana bus terminal into a year-round shelter for the area’s homeless.

At a special board meeting, the supervisors approved the plan to turn the Santa Ana Transit Terminal at 400 W. Santa Ana Blvd. into a shelter. Supervisor Andrew Do, who spearheaded the move, said he will push to have it open in a month.

The supervisors quickly transformed the terminal into an emergency shelter on rainy days in January.

“Our community is tired of talk; Orange County wants action,” said Orange County Supervisor Andrew Do, who has made tackling homelessness his primary focus during his eighteen months on the board.

“By turning this transit terminal into a homeless shelter, we are creating a safe place to help Orange County’s homeless get off the streets and onto a productive path.”

Supervisor Andrew Do scheduled a special session among supervisors at 8:45 a.m. to act on the homeless issue.

Regarding the bus terminal, which the county purchased in May for $3.2 million, Do said he expects the county staff will recommend portable toilets, showers and other equipment, along with medical and social services, and nonprofit food services, to be operating at the terminal within the next 30 to 45 days.

Also in May, supervisors hired Susan Price as the county’s homeless “czar,” to handle the terminal and other homeless issues.

Once the Santa Ana shelter opens, it will offer beds, restrooms, showers in “mobile units,” health inspections of how nonprofits prepare food for the homeless, legal aid and access to substance abuse and mental health treatment, said Supervisor Andrew Do, who proposed Tuesday’s county action.

“It’s time that we take action to get people off the streets and onto a productive path,” Do said.
